It’s common for a scar to form after you suffer from an injury such as a facial cut or burn. In the past, the options were limited for what a doctor could do to minimize or reducing scarring. Fortunately, scar treatments have come a long way, and Dr. Iero can use anything from topical creams to surgical intervention to help reduce the appearance of scars.
What are my options for treatment?
Your scar revision treatment largely depends on the size, location, and severity of your scarred tissue. When you visit our office in Bellaire, TX, Dr. Iero can examine the scarring and determine the best option for treatment. We will discuss all of the options and the details at this appointment, but general information about each treatment can be found below:
- Skin Grafting. If the scarred area is large, such as with burns, the scarred tissue can be removed and replaced with skin from another area of the body.
- Laser Resurfacing. Very popular for acne scars, laser resurfacing causes the outer layer of skin to shed, revealing the healthier, smoother skin underneath. In cases of deep scars, several resurfacing appointments may be required.
- Scar Excision. If there is enough skin nearby the scar, the scarred skin can be removed (excised), and the skin will be closed.
- Specialized Creams. Certain creams are designed to minimize the appearance of scars when applied topically.
While these methods are not guaranteed to completely eliminate scarring, they can greatly reduce the scar’s appearance.
