If you need to correct a jaw or facial bone abnormality, or if you are looking for a substitute for bone grafting, distraction osteogenesis may be the treatment you need. Dr. Iero can use a small device to slowly separate your bone and allow for new bone to develop. This procedure is a good alternative for patients who cannot or would rather not undergo an intensive bone graft surgery. When you visit our Bellaire, TX, office for your consultation, we can discuss whether distraction osteogenesis is the right bone restoration procedure for you.
How does the distraction osteogenesis procedure work?
Distraction osteogenesis typically requires several visits to the office. You must first attend a consultation appointment, during which Dr. Iero can examine your condition, review your condition, and take X-rays or 3D scans. These factors will help him develop your treatment and tailor it to your specific needs. It’s also a chance for you to choose your anesthesia and ask any questions you may have.
The next time you return will be for your placement appointment. At this time, Dr. Iero will carefully separate the bony segments in area that lacks bone and place the distraction device. After the device is in the proper position and your sedation has worn off, you can return home. Healing usually takes a week, after which the device is ready for use. Over the next few weeks or months, you will return to the office for adjustment appointments. Each time, Dr. Iero will slightly adjust the device so that the bone will slowly separate and create room for new bone to grow.
When the new bone has grown in completely, the adjustment process is complete. You will return to the office one last time, and Dr. Iero will remove the distraction device. If you’re hoping to avoid a surgical bone graft and Dr. Iero determines that your bone has good regenerative qualities, this may be the perfect treatment for you.
What are the benefits?
Distraction osteogenesis is beneficial to some patients because of its non-invasiveness. Because it doesn’t require an intensive surgery, there is less post-operative pain and swelling. Additionally, Dr. Iero is able to control the treatment and produce more stable results.
